Jose Mourinho hailed Tottenham striker Harry Kane after he netted in their 2-0 win over West Ham on Tuesday.

This week, Mourinho launched a passionate defence of his attacking record as a manager after Paul Merson claimed Harry Kane may never recapture his previous goalscoring form under his tutelage.

Kane, who had scored seven times in 11 games under Mourinho before sustaining a hamstring injury on New Year’s Day against Southampton, looked off the pace during Spurs’ 1-1 draw with Manchester United.

The England international wasted little time in getting up to speed, though, and netted late on against the Hammers to make it eight in 12 appearances under the Spurs boss.

“I am happy for him,” Mourinho told Sky Sports. “Again he worked a lot and I am happy for him being again better headlines and a better feeling for him.

“He worked phenomenal in this period, in lockdown at home and to get into conditions to help the team, which he is doing. I am happy with lots of things, first of all the result and then the clean sheet.

“The team is more solid, the players have less doubts and the collective work is better and then we play against a team with a coach with a lot of experience who organises his team in a very difficult way for us.”

Mourinho added his sympathy for opponents West Ham, who had a day less to prepare for the match at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Tony Cascarino believes Harry Kane’s goalscoring form will suffer under Jose Mourinho

He said: “I don’t think it is fair for West Ham to come here with 24 less hours than us.

“For them to have 24 hours less is not nice. The same way it is not nice for us when we have three matches in six days when we end against Arsenal.”
